The non-governmental organisation Moroccan Coordination of Doctors for Palestine called for a hunger strike on August 7th in protest over Israel’s starvation of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to MEMO (August 8th).

Israel’s blockade has caused severe food scarcity in Gaza, resulting in acute malnutrition, mostly in children, famine, and death. Approximately 94% of medical facilities have been damaged or destroyed in Gaza, severely undermining healthcare delivery.

Ahmed Zeroual, a Moroccan oral and maxillofacial surgeon, spent six weeks in Gaza hospitals during March and April, according to the outlet. Dr Zeroual participated in the strikes, the aim of which was to express solidarity with medical personnel in Gaza and protest the starvation imposed by Israel on Palestinians, civilians and healthcare workers alike.

He also said that the hunger strike aimed to participate in a united display of global solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Doctors in Morocco are trying to draw attention to the suffering of medical personnel in Gaza and of Palestinians as a whole due to the blockade imposed by Israel.

Hundreds of doctors across the Kingdom responded to the call and participated in the hunger strike, supporting their Gazan counterparts and Palestinian residents suffering from catastrophic, inhumane conditions, as reported by the outlet.

Doctors for Palestine has made several demands through these actions, including that Israel end what they describe as systematic starvation policies against Palestinians.

The strike was part of a wider wave of sit-ins and protest marches taking place across several Moroccan cities in support of Palestine, amid relentless Israeli attacks and a sharp deterioration in humanitarian conditions.

Protestors have been holding banners demanding an end to the systematic policy of starvation, a halt to the genocide of civilians and the immediate opening of crossings to permit the entry of food and medical supplies.

Protestors have also been renewing calls to end all forms of normalisation with Israel.
