Trump eyes peace in DR Congo to secure mineral opportunity

US President Donald Trump reportedly wants to end the long-standing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to secure investments in vital Congolese minerals as reported by Maghrebi Week on August 11th.
The conflict, which also involves neighbouring Rwanda, has led to the US and Qatar mediating ceasefire talks to stop the influence of the M23 militia group, in order to restore regional stability and economic investments.
It is expected that a comprehensive peace agreement between the M23 and DR Congo will be signed on August 18th – an agreement which has been attributed to Trump’s commercially-driven peace strategy.
