Libyan MP and prominent women’s rights activist Siham Sergiwa was abducted from her home in Benghazi on July 17th, 2019, with leaked images of what is supposedly her body with signs of assault and killing sparking renewed interest in the case, according to the Libyan Express on August 13th.

Confirmed reports link Serwiga’s kidnappers to a militia known to carry out extrajudicial killings with ties to Khalifa Haftar’s forces, the army general aligned with the eastern government whose military campaign against Tripoli was criticised by Serwiga in an interview the same day she was abducted.

On July 17th of 2025, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya marked six years since Serwiga’s abduction by calling for a thorough and independent investigation, highlighting that no official investigation has taken place.
