Africa sees record high deaths at the hands of militant groups

Over 155,000 people have been killed in Africa by Islamist militant groups over the last decade, according to a report from the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, as covered by Maghrebi Week on August 11th.
Africa has seen over 3.5 million people displaced and 950,000 square kilometres of its land out of state control. The report stated that there has been a 60% increase in fatalities since 2023 mainly due to increasing levels of insurgency in the Sahel region and Somalia.
The Sahel has seen fatalities rise to a level that is seven times higher than 2019. Somalia and the Lake Chad Basin are also experiencing intense levels of violence.
