At least 24 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip by Israel’s army, as reported by The New Arab via Al Jazeera on August 13th.

Reportedly, 12 people lost their lives during an Israeli air strike in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza city. The strike, which hit a residential area, caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure.

According to information from The Palestinian Red Crescent Society, the death toll also included five children and five people who had been seeking aid at the time of the attacks.

The children were among seven casualties which happened during dawn, when Israeli forces carried out airstrikes on tents sheltering displaced families south of Gaza city.

This attack comes amid the increasingly deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, with Britain, Canada, Australia and several other nations saying that the humanitarian crisis has reached “unimaginable levels,” highlighting the urgent situation in the territory and the increased pressure on Israel from the international community.

On August 8th, Germany announced the suspension of military exports to Israel, expressing concern over the human rights abuses Palestinians face in the enclave.

The German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, said in a statement: “The German government believes that the even tougher military action in the Gaza Strip decided upon by the Israeli cabinet last night makes it increasingly difficult to see how these goals can be achieved.”

“Under these circumstances, the German government will not approve any exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice.”

At the same time, Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed his plan to gain full control of the territory, generating concern among Palestinians and condemnation from the international community. The prime minister said: “We want to have a security perimeter [in the Gaza Strip]. We don’t want to govern it.”
