Senior RSF commander killed by Sudanese military drone strike

A senior commander of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has been killed in a military drone strike, according to Middle East Monitor via RT on August 14th.
According to a military source, the strike targeted a convoy transporting Major General Ahmed Shuaib along the Bara-Umm Sumaima road in North Kordofan state. The drone strike killed him and all of the mercenaries in the convoy.
The source reported that the Sudanese military had extensively monitored the convoy’s movements as part of a broader strategy to intensify pressure on the RSF and eliminate field commanders who have led intense violence in the region and beyond.
Major General Shuaib commanded Group 42, a faction of the RSF that is notorious for its large-scale assaults against civilians and infrastructure. They also cut off strategic supply routes between regional cities. The drone strike inflicted a major blow to the group.
The source claimed that the operation was one of many airstrikes on RSF positions and movements as part of a recent military escalation. The RSF’s offensive capabilities and personnel have been significantly diminished, the source claims.
Despite these claims, the RSF continues to conduct large-scale attacks across the country. On August 11th, the paramilitary group killed at least 40 people in a refugee camp in western Darfur.
North Kordofan state has become a key battleground between the RSF and the Sudanese military, who have been at war since April 2023 after a power struggle turned violent. In mid-July 2025, residents of North Kordofan were victims of one of the largest and most brutal massacres of the conflict, where the RSF killed over 450 civilians in their homes.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, chief of the Sudanese military, recently articulated his commitment to defeating the RSF through conflict. He proclaimed that “we are forging ahead with the battle for dignity to defeat this rebellion”, according to Asharq Al-Aswat on August 15th.
This vow to continue the war came immediately after the United Nations Security Council urged both warring parties to engage in peace talks.
