Algeria: “personal survival at all costs”

Attempts to soften US policy on Western Sahara have seen Algiers resort to methods described as “personal survival at all costs,” as covered by Maghrebi Week on August 25th.

Facing increasing international isolation, Algeria has turned to resourceful tactics to sway Western support for their state, and for the Western Sahara cause, which Algeria sees as closely tied to anti-colonial solidarity and regional balance.

Described as a “shale gas for Western Sahara” deal, Algeria’s economic actions support a backdrop of longstanding commitment to Sahrawi self-determination, rejection of Morocco’s claims to sovereignty and support for the Polisario Front both politically and diplomatically.
