ISIS takes hold in the “world’s most fragile continent”

Africa has been declared the global epicentre of the Islamic State (ISIS), which has evolved from a centralised organisation into a “lethal, autonomous constellation of local insurgencies,” as covered by Maghrebi Week on August 25th.
Once operating like an empire, ISIS has transformed into a remote “global franchise,” with its provinces operating under a financial autonomy that enables resilience after leadership losses.
90% of ISIS-claimed terror attacks take place in Africa, the “world’s most fragile continent,” particularly in the Sahel region, the Lake Chad Basin and in Mozambique.
