Thousands of people from around the world are turning their attention to Tunisia ahead of the country’s convoy, the Global Sumud Flotilla’s departure to break the siege of Gaza.

Mauritania now joins the cause by sending its very own MPs, lawyers, doctors, engineers, journalists and activists to take part in the globally coordinated effort to bring an end to the Israeli blockade of Gaza, according to Middle East Monitor on September 4th.

They are also joined by members of Mauritanian society such as civil society organisations, students, youth movements and sports associations, demonstrating the Sahel country’s widespread solidarity against the war in Gaza.

The most recognisable faces of Mauritania’s delegation include MP Mortada Atfail, Anas Mohamed Fall from the National Order of Mauritanian Lawyers and Dr. Ahmed El-Hiba Mamina on behalf of the National Corps of Mauritanian Doctors.

The Tunisian portion of the wider Sumud Flotilla will be joining an even larger convoy of ships that have departed from the Port of Barcelona in Spain, greatly adding to the wider international effort.

The international community has become increasingly aware of Israel’s aggressive actions leading up to and during the attempts of aid ships to provide humanitarian support to Gaza. For this reason, there has been mounting efforts and pressure on Israel and its backers to end the siege through coordinated campaigns.

This latest flotilla was organised by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Steadfastness Flotilla, Malaysia’s Sumud Nusantara organisation and the Global Gaza Movement.

The goal is the break Israel’s blockade via the sea by sending boats which are transporting aid for the people of Gaza. Palestinians in Gaza have been deliberately deprived of food and medicine due to Israel’s blockade, which has caused an indescribable humanitarian catastrophe.

The organisers of the flotilla say the effort represents a powerful call to action for governments around the world to hold Israel accountable for its breaches of international law.
