French journalist’s jailing in Algeria is part of a broad pattern

The imprisonment of the French sports journalist Christophe Gleizes in Algeria forms part of a broader pattern of French and Algerian figures bearing the brunt of tensions between the two countries, as covered by Maghrebi Week on September 8th.
The French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal has also been handed a jail sentence in Algeria for charges of harming national cohesion.
French consular staff have also been expelled from Algeria and Algerian consular staff have been arrested in France, as tensions have escalated since French President Emmanuel Macron decided last year to back the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Western Sahara.
