Morocco deepens ties with Russia despite dependence on US

Morocco and Russia seem to be open growing their relationship, even though the kingdom relies on the US’s endorsement of their sovereignty over the Western Sahara, MaghrebiWeek reported on September 15th.
Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, had a call with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on September 9th. The two discussed ways in which the countries could expand cooperation in sectors of mutual interest and review upcoming bilateral milestones.
Morocco still relies on Trump’s support over their plan for the Western Sahara, however Trump has threatened tariffs on any nation who buys Russian oil. Standing as one the Russia’s biggest buyers, Morocco could face challenges in balancing both relationships.
