French president’s wife set to prove her gender to a US court
As Macron’s defamation lawsuit against right-wing influencer Candace Owens drags on, the French President and his wife bring new evidence to the table.
According to the BBC on September 18th, the Macrons’ lawyer, Tom Clare, confirmed they will present photographic and scientific evidence in court to prove Emanuel Macron’s wife is, in fact, a biological female. This comes after they filed a lawsuit against Candace Owens for spreading claims online that Brigitte was born male.
Ms Owens’ lawyers have reportedly since responded with a motion to dismiss the claim that she knowingly defamed the French President’s wife.
Clare has claimed the President and his wife are willing to prove “both generically and specifically” that Brigitte is a biological woman.
Clare has also spoken out about the effect the online rumours have had on the French President and his wife, claiming Brigitte has found them “incredibly upsetting.”
“I don’t want to suggest that it somehow has thrown him off his game. But just like anybody who is juggling a career and a family life as well, when your family is under attack, it wears on you. And he’s not immune from that because he’s the president of a country,” Clare stated in an interview.
The lawsuit against Candace Owens alleges she “disregarded all credible evidence disproving her claim in favour of platforming known conspiracy theorists and proven defamers.”
Ms Owens has stuck by her guns, openly reiterating how she believes her claims about Brigitte Macron are true.
As Maghrebi reported, this is not the Macrons’ first courtroom clash over allegations that Brigitte was born male. The couple filed a lawsuit against Natacha Rey, an independent writer, and Amadine Roy, a self-described medium in 2024, both were convicted and found guilty by a lower court. The Paris Court of Appeals later overturned these convictions.
In American defamation cases against public figures, plaintiffs are required to prove “actual malice.” The Macrons may well have scientific proof Brigitte is a biological woman, but proving Ms Owens was fully aware of this at the time of her allegations may be a difficult task.
