South Africa stripped of a win in World Cup qualifier game

On September 28, South Africa was stripped of a win in a qualifier game for the 2026 World Cup, losing its spot as leader of the group, AP reports.
After the nation selected midfielder Teboho Mokoena for the game against Lesotho, even though he had received a one-game ban for his yellow cards in two previous games, FIFA judges ordered South Africa to forfeit three points.
Stripped of three points, South Africa has dropped below new group leader Benin, who is now more likely to be the only nation of the group to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
