Refugees in Libya abused in arbitrary detention
The NGO Refugees in Libya have denounced the practice of arbitrary detention for migrants in Libya, amid abhorrent conditions and a culture of abuse as reported in Maghrebi Week.
The organisation circulated a video earlier in September illustrating the horrific abuse that asylum seekers and migrants face, including a man shown being handcuffed to a window.
Libya has seen an influx of refugees, particularly from neighbouring Sudan, and the deep-rooted presence of human trafficking groups has meant exploitation of asylum seekers is widespread, with the European Union coming under criticism for enabling this system through financial assistance.
