Cameroon: Former ally challenges longtime leadership in election

Cameroon’s election on October 12 could bring an end to the second-longest reigning elected head of state in the world, Paul Biya, as a former ally and opposition member, Beloboumama Egari, challenges him for the presidency, according to Africanews, October 2.
92-year-old Paul Biya is seeking an 8th term as President after 43 years in power. Meanwhile, Egari believes his decades of political experience as a government minister and opposition figure will help him gain wide support and push through his reforms.
Although there are a large number of candidates in this election, the 80-year-old Egari is among the most experienced despite his age, though critics have said that he is partly responsible for the poor state of the nation, given his time as a government minister.
