Sudan: Darfur militia leader receives landmark ICC conviction

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has convicted a former Sudanese militia commander for war crimes and crimes against humanity in a first-of-its-kind court case related to the Darfur atrocities that occurred more than 20 years ago, according to Moroccan government-friendly The North Africa Post, October 7.
Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman – also known as Ali Kushayb – was found by the court to be guilty of 27 counts, including rape, murder, persecution, and mass executions, with Abd-Al-Rahman personally participating in atrocities.
The crimes were also committed by forces under his command in the Janjaweed militia, operating under former President and dictator Omar al-Bashir, who was toppled in a military coup in 2019 after 30 years in power.
