Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco to have 16 team finalists

CAF unveiling new 2025 trophy with African Women Football legends
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 in Morocco is set to increase to 16 team finalists, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said, according to the BBC on 5th October.
The tournament— which usually has 12 competing finalists —has already completed qualifiers for the second and final round. With this expansion, another round of qualifying will likely be conducted, with 11 nations set to grab the remaining four spots.
The 2025 tournament in Morocco saw a 45% increase in the overall prize to $3.45m (£2.6m), of which $1m was picked up by the Champions Nigeria. The CAF has invested in improving women’s football, and is expected to give further details after its executive committee meeting held in Kinshasa.
