Women in Nairobi restoring traditional agriculture
A group of Nubian women in the slums of Kibera, Nairobi, have been turning derelict urban areas into agricultural ground, as reported by Africanews via AFP on 22nd October.
The Mazingria Women Initiative (MWI) was a group founded in 2019 that aimed to empower Nubian women through agricultural practices. They instil ecologically innovative practices that are embdedded in their cultural heritage, using hydrophonics and circular-garden systems to maximise small plots of land.
For the Nubian women involved in MWI, their agriculture is more than just labour to them, but rather an opportunity to strengthen local community and reclaim their cultural identity. More
