Cameroon: Protests turn violent to oppose president’s re-election
On October 27th, Cameroon’s 92-year-old president, Paul Biya, was re-elected with a 53% majority for his eighth term without interruption. Protests erupted again in multiple cities as Cameroonians expressed their anger and discontent at the result, according to Africanews plus agencies.
Protests started before the announcement of the results, later intensifying once they were revealed. The Cameroonian military was deployed to several districts of Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital, due to violence that has reportedly paralysed the city.
The opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary contested the results and claimed the victory. Cameroonians expressed to the media their disapproval of the results and their anger at the re-elected government.
