West African immigrants sue Ghana for US deportation deal
A total of 42 deportees were accepted by the Ghanaian government, including a group of 14 West Africans that arrived on October 13th. The group’s lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has filed a lawsuit on October 15th to challenge the countries’ migration agreement, according to Africa News.
The lawsuit argues that the US-Ghana agreement is unconstitutional since the Ghanaian parliament did not approve it. In addition, the complainants’ solicitor added that it violated international conventions that forbid deportation for refugees who might face persecution once back in their country.
Trump’s administration has signed deportation deals with multiple African countries, including Eswatini, in a move to absolve his nation’s responsibility to care for immigrants held in custody.
