Cameroon: Opposition contests election results
Opposition leaders have contested the Cameroonian election results, which were released on October 27th, according to the Associated Press on October 28th.
President Paul Biya achieved 53.66% of the vote, marking his eighth consecutive term in office, which he has held since 1982. Biya and his opponent, Issa Tchiroma, claimed victory on October 20th, before the results of the October 12th election were released; the final results cannot be appealed.
Biya has faced criticism for his autocratic regime, and his administration has been accused of embezzlement, poor governance, and corruption. The 92-year-old has also faced calls to step down after 43 years in power due to concerns about his health and ability to govern the country effectively.
