On October 28th, Rio de Janeiro’s police launched a raid on crime gangs located in the city’s favelas and has killed 132 Brazilians, which angered residents who accused the police of conducting executions in the targeted neighbourhoods, according to France 24 via AFP.

The authorities expected the death toll to be high, as 2,500 officers participated in the military-style operation that targeted Rio’s “most powerful criminal organisation, the Comando Vermelho.”

Residents of the Penha Complex and Alemao Complex saw the attacks unfold, and later mourned the bodies that were displayed in their streets, criticising the police who they say came only to take lives as it’s unlikely the organisation will be really disrupted by the police raid.
