US to resume nuclear testing to match Russia and China
On October 29th, US President Trump announced on social media his instruction to the Department of War to resume nuclear testing again after the country’s 33-year-long pause in order to match Russia and China’s nuclear testing programs on “an equal basis”, according to the AP.
Russia has responded by pointing out that a global nuclear test ban has been in effect for decades, yet it warned that it would follow suit if any country resumed testing.
After the announcement, Trump didn’t provide much clarity to journalists on the subject. While the details of the renewed nuclear testing are still unknown, the US president’s social media post is a shift in the country’s policies.
