Western Sahara: UN Security Council to vote on autonomy plan

A much anticipated vote on the Western Sahara’s autonomy plan is expected to take place at the Security Council’s headquarters on October 31st, according to Reuters.

The resolution, backed by Morocco, the US and several Western states such as France and Belgium, states that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty “could constitute a most feasible solution” to the long-standing conflict.

In order to pass, the resolution needs 9 votes, but it could be stopped by a veto from China or Russia, whose position is not known. Algeria has been actively trying to rally support against the plan, while the Algerian-backed Polisario Front is demanding a referendum.
