Tanzanian elections: over 700 killed in protests
Over 700 people are reported to have been killed in widespread protests, following reports that gave President Samia Suluhu Hassan as winner of the Tanzanian elections, reports France 24 and agencies on October 31st.
The elections, which took place on October 29th descended into chaos after Hassan barred opposition candidates from standing, banned foreign journalists and imposed a curfew. Crowds gathered in capital Dar es Salaam, facing strong police and army response.
Tanzania has become increasingly repressive in the run-up to the elections as Hassan sought to silence her critics, with civil rights group denouncing a “wave of terror” and activists being kidnapped.
