Algerian FM meets with head of UN Libya mission
Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, met the head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Hanna Tetteh on November 13th according to Algerian government-friendly AL24 News.
The two parties reportedly discussed resolutions to the ongoing political tensions in Libya. UNSMIL is a UN-fronted mission in Libya that was created following the conclusion of the Libyan Civil War.
The mission is aimed at providing post-war efforts relating to the re-establishment of political stability, as the country is currently held under two rival administrations who face constant tensions with each other. Most recently, UNSMIL has reiterated its support for the electoral commission in Libya, and announced an inclusive scheme that reportedly allows a range of marginalised groups to be heard during their mission.

As Attaf and Tetteh met, they discussed the current rival powers in Libya – the UN-recognised Government of National Unity (GNU) led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh based in Tripoli and the Government of Nationality headed by General Khalifa Haftar, based in Tobruk. They discussed the possibility of developing a common ground between the two sides, and establishing peace and unification in order to restore safety and stability across the country.
An official released statement said: “The UN envoy informed the Minister of State of the steps adopted in the UN roadmap submitted to the Security Council on August 21, 2025, and the objectives it includes regarding the preparation of a legal framework for elections, the unification of executive institutions, and the organization of an inclusive national dialogue in preparation for presidential and parliamentary elections.”
Attaf went onto reaffirm that Algeria has no foreign influence or interference when it comes to the current internal affairs in Libya. He exclaimed support for the UN’s effort to rebuild political stability in Libya, emphasising the need of an election process in order to resolve the current divide in Libya.
