Sudan: ICC prosecutors seek life sentence for militia leader
Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) have asked for the leader of the Janjaweed militia to receive a life sentence, according to AP on November 17th.
Ali Muhammad Ali Abd–Al-Rahman was convicted by the ICC on October 6th of ordering and participating in war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sudan’s Darfur region. He was reportedly the Janjaweed’s senior commander, who was sent by the government to repress an uprising against the oppressive Arab Sudanese regime.
The atrocities were committed between August 2003 and March 2004, and included mass killings, rapes and forcible transfer of the civilian population.
