Jordan to bring back military conscription for men
Jordan’s Parliament has passed a law to reintroduce military conscription for men, years after it was repealed in 1991, according to a Asharq Al-Awsat citing the Petra news agency on November 17th.
It will now need to be ratified by the Senate and approved by King Abdullah II. An announcement made by Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II, highlighted the need to “prepare young men to be ready to serve the country and defend it”.
The law comes in a very unstable period in the region, with the continuing conflict in Gaza, and fears about Israel’s expansionist plans and Netanyahu’s visions of a Greater Israel.
