Algerian diplomacy struggling after Western Sahara blow
Following a UN vote which recognised Resolution 2797 as a “feasible solution” to the Western Sahara conflict, Algerian diplomacy is struggling to assert its position on the global stage, reports Maghrebi Week on 17th November.
Despite efforts to deepen ties with China, Russia and the United States, Algeria’s dramatic fallout with France and neighbouring Mali, as well as the longstanding rift with Morocco, are isolating the North African state.
While Algeria has reacted negatively to the UN vote, accusing Morocco of pushing its agenda by force, it is also an opportunity to turn the page on a 50-year-long conflict in the Western Sahara and rebuild a more united North Africa.
