Bangladesh former prime minister sentenced to death
Sheikh Hasina, former prime minister of Bangladesh, faces a death sentence from a court ruling that found her guilty of crimes against humanity when ordering a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising last year, Maghrebi Week reported on November 24th. Â
Hasina has been found guilty of incitement and issuing orders to kill during protests in July and August of 2024, which resulted in the toppling of her government. She has been living in exile in India ever since. Â
UN figures estimate up to 1,400 people may have been killed, and thousands wounded during demonstrations. Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammed Yunus, has announced elections will take place in February 2026, with Hasina’s Awami League Party barred from participation. Â
