US President Donald Trump has initiated the process of designating some chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist groups, The National plus agencies reported on November 24th.

The order instructs Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to begin the process “by which certain chapters or other subdivisions of the Muslim Brotherhood shall be considered for designation as Foreign Terrorist Organisations.”

The White House has targeted Brotherhood chapters in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan, asserting that they “engage in or facilitate and support violence and destabilisation campaigns that harm their own regions, United States citizens, and United States interests”, and further added that groups in those countries support attacks on Israel and funded Hamas.

The White House stated President Trump “is confronting the Muslim Brotherhood’s transnational network, which fuels terrorism and destabilisation campaigns against US interests and allies in the Middle East”.

President Trump declared the plan, stating it would be executed “in the strongest and most powerful terms.”

This move comes amidst a renewed push in Washington DC to designate the organisation as a terrorist group, with Senator Ted Cruz having introduced a bill on July 17th to push for the designation.

What’s more, the US state of Texas prescribed the brotherhood, and the civil rights organisation the Council on American-Islamic Relations as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal groups.

The group was founded in Egypt in the late 1920s, and currently has affiliates across much of the Arab and Muslim world. Several governments have condemned the group as terrorists, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Russia.

Jordan, banned the organisation in April after there was an alleged plot against the country, which according to authorities, was connected with group.
