Algeria to host conference on colonial crimes in Africa
An international conference revisiting colonial crimes in Africa will be hosted by Algeria this week, reports state-owned AL24 News on 26th November.
The summit will bring together academics, lawyers and politicians to reflect on Africa’s colonial past and to discuss efforts to criminalise colonialism, apartheid and slavery across the continent. It will also address the topics of reparations and the restitution of stolen artefacts.
This is a particularly important event for Algeria, as the question of reparations and the return of colonial archives remains a thorny issue with former colonial power France. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez is due to visit Algeria shortly to revive its very degraded relations between the two countries.
