Floods in southern Thailand Kill 33 people
Thailand’s government declared a state of emergency in Songkhla province on November 25 following severe flooding, which has killed at least 33 people.
According to The National Plus Agencies, more than 980,000 homes and 2.7 million people have been affected by the floods.
The floods have swept through nine Thai provinces and eight states in neighbouring Malaysia for the second consecutive year, leading both countries to urge the evacuation of almost 45,000 people.
According to authorities, on November 26, “33 people have died across seven provinces, with causes including flash floods, electrocution and drowning.”
More than 1,200 people have had to leave their homes and belongings behind, a situation that has caused significant stress for civilians.
In neighbouring countries, Indonesia has also experienced severe flooding, with 13 people believed to have died, while one fatality has been reported in Malaysia.
In February 2025, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck near the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, prompting residents to flee.

In Hat Yai, a public health official explained that helicopters would deliver food and evacuate patients from the main government hospital, where at least 600 patients were being treated, including 50 in intensive care.
In the area, rainfall reached 335 mm, reportedly the highest level in 300 years. The Thai Navy said military helicopters were also transporting generators to the hospital.
Thailand has faced multiple crises this year. Beyond the floods, it also experienced armed clashes with Cambodia in July 2025.
At least 11 civilians were killed following border clashes, after Cambodia fired rockets and artillery. The Thai army claimed that six Cambodian soldiers opened fire near a military station, while Cambodia accused Thailand of causing the escalation.
The worsening conditions underscore the growing vulnerability of Southeast Asia to extreme weather events.
