Sudan: 1,700 children severely malnourished in Darfur camp
It was reported on November 21 that at least 1,700 children are suffering from severe malnutrition in a displacement camp in Tawila, North Darfur.
According to Middle East Monitor via Anadolu, it is one of the largest camps for displaced Sudanese people, and the constant battle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has had a huge effect on Sudanese civilians.
The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees explained that nearly two-thirds of Sudan’s population now requires urgent humanitarian aid, both in displacement camps and in rural host communities, villages, and nomadic areas.
Since the war began in April 2023, the Tawila camp has received over 1 million displaced people, and many are in desperate need.

The UN’s Humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, visited two camps in November, one of which was Tawila camp, where he heard the horrific experiences of “desperate” survivors.
Fletcher’s week-long mission aimed not only to assess the scale of the crisis and identify urgent needs, but also to draw international attention to Sudan’s escalating humanitarian emergency.
Latest field data indicates that 1,600 Sudanese people have been subjected to gender-based violence, and 3,600 elderly people are suffering from severe malnutrition.
The Sudan doctors network has also said on November 21st that its field teams documented the deaths of 23 children from acute malnutrition in the cities of Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan over the past month. The organisation blames the deaths on an RSF blockade, which has cut off key essentials, including food, medicine, and necessities.
On July 11, UNICEF released a statement that revealed that over 40,000 children in North Darfur were suffering from acute malnutrition, leading them to be admitted for treatment between January and May 2025.
Without significant change, the country will continue to see children suffering from malnutrition and large numbers of people displaced without stable shelter, food, or basic necessities.
