A coalition of regional and civil society groups has petitioned the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the violence in Tanzania surrounding the October 29th election, according to Africa News and agencies on November 26th.

At least 700 people were killed in widespread protests over the election, which President Samia Suluhu Hassan won. Opposition parties were barred from standing, while foreign journalists were banned from reporting during the run-up to the election. More than 240 people have also been charged with treason.

Petitioners are urging the ICC to open a formal investigation into the violence; however, the court has not yet responded to this request.
