Algeria calls for recognition of colonial crimes
Leaders from African nations held a conference in Algiers on November 30th, where they called for former European colonial powers to recognise colonial-era crimes, according to Maghrebi Week on December 8th.
The conference, attended by diplomats, academics, lawyers, and leaders, convened to advance an African Union resolution passed in February, which called for justice and reparations for victims of crimes committed under colonial rule.
An opening speech was given by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, who stated that, “Africa is entitled to demand the official and explicit recognition of the crimes committed against its peoples during the colonial period.”
