Algerian separatist group holds ‘independence’ conference in Paris
The Algerian separatist group, Movement for the Autonomy of Kabylia (MAK), held a controversial conference in Paris, during which it declared the creation of a ‘Federal Republic of Kabylia’, reports Le Matin D’Algérie on 15th December.
The MAK’s president, Ferhat Mehenni, read a long declaration going over the region’s long history of resistance and highlighting the Algerian regime’s refusal to engage with their demands. He ended his speech by declaring Kabylia’s independence from Algeria.
Mehenni has been living in exile in France for over 2 decades. He received a 20-year jail sentence in absentia from an Algerian court in 2024 for “terrorist acts”.
