Protestors jailed amid Cameroon election unrest
An estimated 30 protestors have been detained between December 12th and 13th, amid unrest linked to Cameroon’s presidential election in October, according to Africa News and agencies.
A total of 50 people were arrested and brought before a military court for allegedly participating in demonstrations opposing the October 12th election results, which President Paul Biya won, securing 53.66% of the vote. Although 20 protestors were released, around 30 others were remanded.
The election results granted 92-year-old Biya his eighth consecutive term in office, which he has held since 1982. Biya’s administration has faced allegations of corruption, embezzlement, and poor governance.
