The M23 armed group, linked to Rwanda, has announced they are withdrawing from the Congolese town of Uvira, according to France24 on 18th December.

They had seized the strategic city, close to the Burundi borders, on 11th December, just a week after both the Rwandan and Congolese leaders met in Washington to sign a US-brokered peace deal. Over 400 civilians have reportedly been killed.

The offensive provoked Washington’s ire, with US envoy to the UN Mike Waltz threatening possible action against Rwanda over the agreement’s violation.
