Tunisians commemorate the 15th anniversary of the revolution
Tunisians filled Tunis’ main avenue to commemorate the 15th anniversary of street seller Mohamed Bouazizi’s self-immolation, which triggered the Arab Spring revolutions across the Arab world, reports Tunisian state-friendly La Presse on 18th December.
Bouazizi’s act was a reaction against the local authorities’ contempt, while he was struggling to support his family in the small town of Sidi Bouzid. It led to huge protests in Tunisia and beyond, ultimately bringing down the Ben Ali regime.
President Kais Saied appeared at the event, presenting his leadership as a continuation of the revolution’s spirit, but there were also counter demonstrations denouncing the authoritarian turn of his presidency.
