Nine migrants from sub-Saharan Africa have died from exposure to freezing temperatures as they attempted to pass through the mountainous Jerada Province region in Morocco, according to Maghrebi week on 22nd December.

The Moroccan Association of Human Rights said on December 13 that the bodies of seven men and two women were recovered in Ras Asfour, near the Algerian border.

The deaths occurred less than a week after the Moroccan Organisation of Human Rights, a separate group, called for more humane border policies for migrants and the decriminalisation of irregular migration.
