Libya’s links to IRA discussed in new report
The UK government has partially released a report’s findings, originally kept secret since 2020 for national security reasons, on the potential compensation of victims of IRA attacks funded by former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, as reported in Maghrebi Week on October 27th.
The report suggests using tax taken from frozen Libyan assets in the UK to compensate victims, but also states that determining which victims suffered from specifically Libyan funded attacks would be near impossible.
Libya has previously paid compensation to American, German and French victims of attacks the nation has funded, and therefore the UK government’s decision to keep secret the reports findings for years was met with surprise, and the decision has been linked to an oil deal between former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Gaddafi.
