Germany’s coalition government has approved a voluntary military service model in a bid to boost its army numbers, amid rising tensions with Russia and the new-found unreliability of their long-time ally, the US, according to France 24 on November 14th.

Germany will be introducing questionnaires to recruit more people as well as financial incentives, but some are worried about a potential reintroduction of conscription.

Through this new measure, Germany aims to increase its defence capabilities, as it faces mounting pressure from NATO to build up its army’s numbers from 182,000 to 460,00 active soldiers and reservists.
