Libya and Hungary were found engaging in high-level discussions mobilising the revival of bilateral ties between the two countries, Moroccan-friendly outlet North Africa Post, plus agencies reported on 18th November.

Maghrebi Week Nov 17

Marcell BĂrĂł, Hungary’s National Security Adviser, was accompanied by Hungary’s Special Envoy for Africa as they arrived in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, on November 17th.

In Tripoli, they met with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah to discuss existing bilateral strategies and prospective areas of mutual interest for the nations. They explored potential pathways that could strengthen cooperation between the countries and build their diplomatic relations with one another.

Reports indicate that the two sides discussed appointing an ambassador to help facilitate greater economic and investment cooperation between the countries.

Discussions were also reportedly highly focused on sectors such as energy which Libya has seen high foreign investment prospects in recent years. By partnering with Hungary, Libya could secure significant support for rebuilding its oil and energy sectors.

Libya’s investment in bilateral cooperation with Hungary reflects the nation’s growing interest in foreign relations. On November 12th, Libya bolstered their bilateral energy ties with Oman. Libya also strengthened its economic ties with Tunisia in October. Moreover, the country continues to maintain close relations with Italy, with whom it partnered to tackle irregular migration as part of a controversial scheme.

While the discussions between Dbeibah and BĂrĂł signal exciting directions for the future of both nations, it is unclear whether the restored bilateral ties between the countries will directly manifest into investments towards energy, economy, or irregular migration. However, the plans clearly show Dbeibah’s interest in helping to restore Libya following its civil war.
