Western Sahara: Spanish opposition rejects Resolution 2797
Spain’s opposition party, Popular Party (PP), has rejected the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, Resolution 2797, as reported in Maghrebi Week on November 24th.
This is despite the Spanish government’s support for the plan, which would grant the Western Sahara limited self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty, dating back to 2022. On October 31st, the UN Security Council voted to endorse the proposal as a “most feasible solution” to the 50-year conflict over the territory.
The PP has drawn criticism over its support for the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, a separatist militia that claims to fight against what it perceives as Morocco’s illegal military occupation of the region.
