Syria: Alawites protest as sectarian tensions rise
Hundreds of people in Latakia in Syria, held a rare public demonstration to condemn recent attacks on the Alawite community, reflecting the rising sectarian tensions since Bashar al-Assad’s fall, as reported by Maghrebi Week on December 1st.
Protesters demanded unity, justice for victims, the withdrawal of armed factions, and the release of detainees, amid fears of renewed communal violence following clashes and the killing of a Sunni Bedouin couple in Homs.
Authorities insisted the Homs incident was criminal rather than sectarian, but Alawite groups continued to mobilise as concerns over security and retaliatory unrest grew.
