A major conference was held in Algiers by the Chinese Ambassador to Algeria Dong Guangli, according to state-friendly Algerie360 on 4th December.

The event aimed to highlight the diplomatic relations between both countries and give updates on various investment projects in Algeria.

China has pledged $4.5 billions in investments in the North African state, with $2 billion already spent on 8 different projects. In particular, Chinese appliances giant Hisense and its Algerian partner Condor are in the process of developing the largest industrial hub in Africa in Bordj Bou Arreridj, about 150 miles from Algiers. They will produce household appliances, mainly for exportation across the region.

Guangli discussed China’s 5-year roadmap, adopted by the Chinese Communist Party, which focuses on innovation and social wellbeing. Algeria is a strategic part of these plans as it is perceived as the new industrial hub for Africa, and Guangli described the countries as “sincere friends and natural partners” on their path towards development.

Algeria had already taken part in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), held in June 2025 in Beijing, with Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of African Affairs, Salma Mansouri, as well as several Algerian business representatives in attendance. At the meeting, Mansouri had emphasized the need to strengthen institutional coordination between China and the continent, in order to implement agreements more efficiently.

China has become increasingly influential across the African continent over the last decade, reflecting the country’s interest in Africa’s vast resources and potential. Ambassador Guangli specifically mentioned China’s policy of applying no custom tariffs on African countries it has a diplomatic relation with, which should “reinforce the competitiveness of African products on the Chinese market and encourage industrial development”.

Algeria has been struggling to establish a strong global presence after the UN’s resolution on the Western Sahara conflict. Its strategy of developing stronger ties with China, as well as with Russia, has allowed the North African country to seek new investment opportunities and partnerships.
