Sudanese militia leader sentenced at ICC

The leader of a Sudanese militia has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for atrocities carried out in Darfur between 2003 and 2004, according to Africa News and AP on December 9th.

Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb, was a senior leader of the Janjaweed militia. He was charged with 27 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC), including allegations that he oversaw a campaign of rape, torture, murder and the deliberate targeting of civilians.

Prosecutors were seeking a life sentence for his role in repressing an uprising against Sudan’s oppressive Arab Sudanese regime.
