Ethiopia: new report denounces deteriorating human rights
A report published by the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders has raised the alarm on the worsening of political repression in Ethiopia, reports RFI on 11th December.
The situation has deteriorated sharply since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took power in 2018, with journalists and human rights activists being regularly arrested, tortured or becoming victims of “enforced disappearances.” This takes place as part of systematic repression against any opposition.
The reports also highlights the recurrent use of state of emergency measures, for instance during the COVID pandemic or the conflict with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, to justify arrests, arbitrary detentions and surveillance of perceived dissidents.
