Severe flash floods in Safi, on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, have killed 37 following a night of thunderstorms and heavy rain, reports Hespress on 15th December. At least 14 people have been hospitalised, with 2 in intensive care.

Search and rescue operations are still under way and residents have been advised to follow safety guidance. The floods also claimed one life in Tinghir, in the High Atlas.

Morocco is increasingly at risk of severe weather patterns, with floods and extreme weather becoming more frequent. An unprecedented heatwave killed 21 in July 2024 in Beni Mellal, while wildfires devastated the north of the country in August 2025.
